This past Wednesday I was sitting in a stake auxiliary training meeting, one of the points that was made was how much time we spend on our phones. The girl that was leading our discussion made the point of how we rarely see the general authorities drinking water/getting up to leave for the bathroom during conference or how we don't stop our meetings so that one person can go to the bathroom. She then related it to our cell phones and how we shouldn't be focusing more on them than what is being taught.
After the meeting I was talking to the other counselor in the Relief Society presidency, and we realized that we are on our phones during our meetings way too much. We decided that we were going challenge our sisters, as well as ourselves, to leave our cell phones out of our lesson.
I'm going to admit it, it was rough. The other counselor and I went through slight withdrawals. But I don't think I have gotten so much out of a lesson in a long time. It was incredible! We had a very deep, meaningful, and insightful discussion.
I didn't think that it would make such a big impact. Putting my phone down for an hour not only made Relief Society better, but it made my entire day better.
Putting down a phone is a small and simple act. But it can change your whole day. Life shouldn't revolve around a tiny little object. It definitely has it's benefits of helping us communicate with those that are far away, but it also impairs us from communicating with those that are around us.
Is our phone conflicting with our ability to listen to the Holy Ghost?
